Cleaning Silver CZ Jewelry
Part of the challenge of cleaning silver CZ (cubic zirconia) jewelry is that the two elements of your jewelry are very different and have different cleaning and polishing needs. The sterling silver in which the created CZ stone is set should be treated like a classic piece of precious metal. Keep it in a soft-cloth bag when not worn, and polish it by hand on a regular basis.
Cleaning the CZ stones set in your silver jewelry is a delicate process with several important steps:
- Make sure that the stone is not loose before you clean it. If you can wiggle it with a toothpick, you should get it repaired before you clean it.
- Never immerse a stone in water or any liquid if it is foil-backed, or the foil will disengage.
- Use a solution of a drop or 2 of ammonia and 2 or 3 drops of dishwashing soap in half a cup of warm water on a damp cloth to clean each piece meticulously.
Clean Silver CZ Jewelry As You Would Clean a Diamond
You can use professional jewelry cleaning tools if you have them, but you will probably be fine cleaning CZ silver jewelry with a damp cloth, a drying cloth, tooth picks, pipe cleaners, a rouge cloth and a soft toothbrush. Make sure that the cloths are a soft material. 100 percent cotton is ideal, and will also work well for polishing the sterling silver, but only when dry.
Never use bleach, abrasives or household chemicals on your CZ created stones or your sterling silver jewelry. Regularly wiping your CZ stones with a moist cloth will make their actual formal cleaning process much easier. Clean your CZ just as you would the precious stone with which it is so often confused--a diamond.
